FUNDAMENTALS OF NURSING: Definition of Nursing

Have you ever asked yourself what is nursing? It is the most basic thing that every nurse (student or registered) must know. Aside from its definition, in taking the Nurse Licensure Exam, one should know the person who made a definition of nursing.

According to Nightingale, nursing is an act of UTILIZING THE ENVIRONMENT of the patient to assist him in his recovery. As you can observe I highlighted ‘utilizing the environment’; these are the key words that would identify Nightingale’s definition of nursing.

The American Nurses Association (ANA), as well as the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) follows the definition that nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health problems.

While Virginia Henderson wrote that ‘The unique function of a nurse is to assist an individual, sick or well in the performance of those activities that contributes to its health and recovery.’

What is common to us is the definition that says ‘Nursing is a science and art that utilizes science of health and the art of caring.’
